KnownHost VPS Review 2026: 15 Years as a Paying Customer

knownhost vps review 12 years of use real

I have paid KnownHost every month since October 2011, through three
different arrangements: twelve years on my own VPS while I ran a hosting
business, a step down to reseller accounts when I stopped promoting it, and a
managed VPS that has been carrying a client project for over a year now. This
KnownHost VPS review comes out of that, not out of a spec sheet.

Where I stand today

I am a current KnownHost customer on two accounts. A managed VPS runs a
client project I have hosted with them for more than a year, and my reseller
account is still active. I put that first because most hosting reviews are
written either by people who never bought the product or by people who stopped
using it years ago, and the page rarely tells you which.

My journey with KnownHost

My first contact with KnownHost was on 11 October 2011. My first support
ticket came back within 3 hours, which set the tone for the decade that
followed. I signed up three days later, on 14 October 2011, on a plan called
VS3-tx at $56.91 a month.

Why I switched to KnownHost

Support problems drove me off my previous host (let us just say they have a
reptile mascot and leave it there). That turned out to be a blessing, because
KnownHost support went on to be the strongest thing about them.

Support experience

A year in, in October 2012, I hit serious security problems. My server
maintenance knowledge was thin at the time, so I hired a server management firm
to harden the box. As the business grew we built that skill in house and
stopped needing outside help.

What has held up over the whole relationship:

  • Average ticket response under 30 minutes, which matters more than it
sounds when I am on GMT and they are on US Central
  • In house support team, not outsourced
  • Agents who actually know the stack
  • Most issues closed on first contact instead of being bounced back

The criticism I will keep making: a few of the newer support operators have
come across as condescending. I have always raised it directly and it has
always been dealt with, but it reads as a training gap rather than one bad day.

VPS plans and pricing

Everything below was checked against KnownHost on 14 September 2026.
Hosting pricing moves, so treat it as a snapshot and confirm on the day you
buy.

1. Unmanaged VPS

  • From $5 a month
  • For people comfortable administering their own server
  • Available in both US and European data centres

2. Managed VPS

  • Basic from $43.25 a month, with 6GB RAM and 100GB NVMe storage
  • Tiers run up through Standard, Professional and Premium to Extreme at
    $143.25 a month with 16GB RAM and 500GB NVMe
  • Dedicated CPU cores and two dedicated IP addresses on every tier
  • The sensible choice for reseller accounts or agency sites

3. High frequency NVMe VPS

  • Managed from $47.25 a month, unmanaged from $12
  • Faster than standard SSD hosting, so worth it for speed critical work
  • Ships with cPanel or DirectAdmin

All plans offer add ons for LiteSpeed, SolusVM, JetBackup, Imunify and
MailChannels.

What fifteen years of invoices actually show

My KnownHost billing history, listing every VPS I have ordered since October 2011 with dates and monthly prices

That is my own billing history, and it is the part of this review I would
read first if I were you. The VPS-3 at the bottom is the October 2011 signup.
The Basic VPS above it ran from February 2013 to October 2023 at $43.50 a
month, which is very nearly eleven unbroken years on one box.

Hold that $43.50 next to today’s pricing. The Basic managed plan now costs
$43.25 and comes with 6GB of RAM and 100GB of NVMe. I am paying slightly less
than I was a decade ago for a machine several times the size. For a host with a
reputation as the expensive option, that is not the direction I expected.

In October 2023 I scaled down from my own VPS to reseller accounts. That was
not a service failure. I had stopped actively promoting my web hosting business
and no longer needed the capacity. Since then I have taken a managed VPS with
them again for a client project, which is the account I run today.

Pros and cons

Pros

  1. Exceptional uptime, with barely any downtime in the whole relationship
  2. Robust security, particularly on the managed plans
  3. Support that knows the answer
  4. Most issues resolved on first contact
  5. Stable and predictable, which is the entire reason to pay more

Cons

  1. Higher pricing than most competitors
  2. Only three data centres: Atlanta, Seattle and Amsterdam
  3. Limited payment options: bank transfer, PayPal and Stripe
  4. Some newer support staff need more customer service training

Third party KnownHost reviews

My recommendation

If you value reliability over finding the cheapest option, KnownHost is a
good choice. The higher price buys support and uptime. I am still paying it
after all these years, and I put a client on them when I had every option
open to me, which is the most honest recommendation I can give you.

Before you buy:

  1. Read recent reviews on TrustPilot and HostAdvice, not just this page
  2. Work out what you actually need, because the managed tiers are a lot of
    machine for one small site
  3. Compare on price if price is what decides it, because KnownHost will not
    win that comparison
